ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS This memo has benefited from review by and suggestions from the IETF's Common Authentication Technology(CAT) working group, chaired by John Linn, and from Marcus J. Ranum.
Even though this memo is about MTAs and recommendations for them, some of what is done here also impacts UAs(User Agents, the"ordinary mail programs").
This memo, written by the best known German cremation specialist of the time, shows that the total cremation capacity of 4,756 bodies per day, as stated by Auschwitz Central Building Administration in report for Berlin dated 28th June 1943, is greatly exaggerated.
Abstract This memo gives a mission statement for the IETF, tries to define the terms used in the statement sufficiently to make the mission statement understandable and useful, argues why the IETF needs a mission statement, and tries to capture some of the debate that led to this point.
