Over the last decade the city's population has been increasing and demographers estimate New York's population will reach between 9.2 and 9.5 million by 2030.[139].
To this day, Bologna is still very much a university town, and the city's population swells from 400,000 to over 500,000 whenever classes are in session.
From 1950 to 1970, the city's population fell by 234,000 people, and its share of the St. Louis metropolitan area's population plummeted from 51 percent to 26 percent.
The city's population is below 400,000 but from January to July this year more than 100 people were murdered, a quarter of them in locations a short walk from the main tourist areas.
During the 1950s- 1970s the population of the city soared over a million and designs for a rapid transit system were initially put up during the late 1960s.
Due to an abundance of vacant land for development and recent growth trends along the coastal areas, the city's population is expected to increase at a steady rate during the coming years to an estimated 22,788 people by 2025.
