Professional people included anyone who could read and write in any language-clerks, doctors, astronomers, judges, soothsayers, engineers, teachers, imams, rabbis, or priests.
In 2003, ASIA launched the long distance sponsorship project with the first 25 children who had the opportunity to learn how to read and write Tibetan.
Since their introduction, the programs have helped 5.5 million young people and adults; 2.6 million of them were taught to read and write by 54 non-governmental organizations.
