On instructions from my Government, I have the honour to transmit to you herewith the text of section( a) of that part of the press release issued following the seventieth session of the Ministerial Council of the Gulf Cooperation Council, held on 14 and 15 March 1999 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, that concerns the occupation by the Islamic Republic of Iran of the Greater Tunb, the Lesser Tunb and Abu Musa, three islands belonging to the United Arab Emirates.

In the same context, the fraternal State of the United Arab Emirates continues to claim its legitimate sovereignty over the islands of Greater Tunb, Lesser Tunb and Abu Moussa.
The dispute between the United Arab Emirates and the Islamic Republic of Iran concerning sovereignty over the islands of Abu Musa, Greater Tunb and Lesser Tunb has remained unresolved.
Occupation by Iran of the three Arab Islands of the Greater Tunb, the Lesser Tunb and Abu Musa in the Arabian Gulf, which belong to the United Arab Emirates.
The Council reiterates its firm position in support of the United Arab Emirates and affirms its sovereignty over its three islands, the Greater Tunb, the Lesser Tunb and Abu Musa.
Iran ' s ongoing occupation since 1971 of the United Arab Emirates '' three islands of Abu Musa and Greater and Lesser Tunb is an issue of central importance to us.
The Supreme Council discussed the occupation by the Islamic Republic of Iran of the three islands, Greater and Lesser Tunb and Abu Musa, which belong to the State of the United Arab Emirates.

The United Arab Emirates wishes to establish good-neighbourly relations and cooperation with the Islamic Republic of Iran, but does not accept any encroachment on its sovereignty over its three islands of Lesser Tunb, Greater Tunb and Abu Musa.
To commend the United Arab Emirates on its initiative to find a peaceful and just settlement to the issue of the three occupied islands(the Greater Tunb, the Lesser Tunb and Abu Musa) with the Islamic Republic of Iran;
The United Arab Emirates strongly rejects and objects to the baseless claim made by the Islamic Republic of Iran to sovereignty over the three United Arab Emirates islands of Lesser Tunb, Greater Tunb and Abu Musa in the Arabian Gulf.
My Government follows with great interest and optimism the official contacts maintained between the United Arab Emirates and the Islamic Republic of Iran regarding the dispute on the three islands belonging to the Emirates, Abu Musa, Greater Tunb and Lesser Tunb.
The decision is entitled" Occupation by Iran of the three Arab islands of the Greater Tunb, the Lesser Tunb and Abu Musa in the Arabian Gulf, which belong to the United Arab Emirates"(decision No. 6495-123-3/3/2005)(see annex).
On page 8 of the said document, which quotes the conclusion of the response of the United Arab Emirates, a baseless claim is made regarding the three Iranian islands situated in the Persian Gulf, namely, Abu Mousa, the Greater Tunb and the Lesser Tunb.
