As an extra option, the ADT7311 digital temperature sensor can be used to measure the cold junction temperature instead of the RTD.
Instead of using an external RTD, the ADT7311 temperature sensor can be used to measure the cold junction temperature.
Figure 2 shows that the cold junction temperature is measured with another temperature sensitive device, typically a thermistor, diode, RTD, or semiconductor temperature sensor.
We use the terms"measurement junction" and"reference junction" rather than the more traditional"hot junction" and"cold junction.".
The joined the other end of these dissimilar metals is referred to as the COLD END or COLD JUNCTION.
The other end of these dissimilar metals is referred to as the COLD END or COLD JUNCTION.
To maintain a consistent and known temperature of 0°C, traditional cold junctions would be chilled in an ice-cold water bath(hence the name"cold junction").
Understanding of cold junction compensation is important;
The RTD was used for cold junction compensation.
The RTD is used for cold junction compensation.
Also, Thermocouples need a reference measurement point called“Cold Junction”.
This process is known as reference junction compensation(cold junction compensation.).
Compensation for the cold junction is made through an internal temperature measurement at the terminals.
Hence, the voltage from a known cold junction can be simulated, and the appropriate correction applied.
To make accurate measurements, this must be compensated for by using a technique known as cold junction compensation(CJC).
Traditionally this was done with a carefully constructed ice bath(hence the term‘cold' junction compensation).
Therefore, other correction methods need to be used to compensate for the temperature influence when the cold junction temperature t0≠ 0℃.
The thermistor can also be used as an electronic circuit component for meter line temperature compensation and temperature difference cold junction temperature compensation.
If the leads are too long or too thin, the total series resistance may cause signal degradation before the EMF reaches the cold junction.
The joined end is typically referred to as the“hot” junction, while the open end is called the“cold” junction.
