American blacks and white liberals actually believed that an inexperienced candidate from nowhere without an organization of his own could make a difference.
Oftentimes when we think about the history of blacks in America, we think about the heinous acts and numerous injustices that we experienced as people of color because of the color of our skin, when in fact, in post-Civil War America, it was the hair of an African-American male or female that was known as the most"telling feature" of Negro status, more so than the color of the skin.
But when one has admitted that nationalism has not triumphed everywhere, that there are still peoples whose judgments are not at the mercy of their desires, the fact does remain that the pressing problems- India, Poland, Palestine, the Spanish civil war, the Moscow trials, the American Negroes, the Russo-German Pact or what have you- cannot be, or at least never are, discussed upon a reasonable level.
