Wastewater sludge is a sustainable and renewable resource. We will emphasize the importance of"resource recovery" from the wastewater sludge as a new role of sewage in our society and, at the same time, we will generate a new energy(bio-mass energy).
Biomass includes resources from livestock, forestry, food and sewage sludge. Forestry resources are also used as a raw material for biomass power generation, but there are issues in terms of obtaining and collecting the biomass, as well as high costs.
Biomass, such as garbage, sewage sludge and livestock excreta, is a renewable energy source which has been viewed as carbon-neutral and has received a lot of attention as an energy resource that can contribute to prevention of global warming and to solving energy issues.
This project has been undertaken to demonstrate biogas as a renewable energy source for promoting similar projects and achieving effective use of biomass resources. Biogas, a flammable gas comprised primarily of methane, is produced through fermentation of organic matter such as sewage sludge and food residues.
Waste-derived fuels can be fuels made from fossil sources or a mix of fossil and biomass inputs, e.g. municipal solid waste, used tires, dried sewage sludge, and sawdust impregnated with chemicals from fossil sources.
The YM bacterium is a microbe that was discovered by Masaichi Yamamoto of Sanyu Co. in Japan. If you add YM bacteria to organic matter such as sewage sludge or food scraps, and send air through the mixture, the organic matter ferments and decomposes at high temperatures over 100 degrees.
In order to contribute to the creation of a recycling society, JFE Engineering will also actively promote this technology in Southeast Asia and other regions where urbanization is progressing rapidly, and not only power shortages but also treatment of sewage sludge and food waste have become issues.
Conversely, by way of research and development items, methane fermentation is being promoted through a combination of livestock manure, sewage sludge, and food waste, without fixating on any single biomass source. Work is also being done to manufacture biofuel from inedible cellulosic biomass, microalgae, and other sources that do not compete with food uses.
Besides high-viscosity sewage sludge, MHIEC's MSD series is also expected to be useful for drying and reducing the volume of a wide range of dewatered sludge: for example, residues from chemical products, foods and biomass. Focusing on the fact that hydrogen sulfide is produced from the activities of microorganisms, or anaerobic bacteria, in sewage water sludge, Kurita has built a system that measures the properties of sludge to monitor the state of their activities and predict hydrogen sulfide generation, enabling optimal control of the amount of deodorant to be added.
Biomass is the resource contained in organic substances such as raw garbage, sewage sludge, livestock feces, and waste vegetation. Because biomass originally comes from recyclable material such as plants, its combustion causes no further accumulation of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere(since plants absorb CO2 and restore the resource), so that there is no contribution to global warming.
In addition, the sludge treatment facilities including the reactivation of the digestion system will be carried out upgrading and repairing of the facilities and then operated under the RO(Rehabilitate Operate) scheme engaging operation and management. Meanwhile, facilities to utilize biogas generated from sewage sludge will be transferred the ownership of the facilities to Aichi Prefecture after carrying out the development of the facilities, and then operated under the BTO(Build Transfer and Operate) scheme conducting operation and management.
