Internal heating and contact point heating, which are microwave characteristics, were observed, and the average reaction temperature for this smelting was lowered from the conventional 1,200- 1,400°C to 1,000°C. This research result was published in the April 12th issue of"Scientific Reports," the online edition of the sister magazine of the UK scientific journal Nature.
Discarded circuit boards from home appliances, personal computers, cellular and smartphones, communications servers and other digital devices are commonly referred to as E-Scrap and contain a high concentration of gold, silver, copper, palladium and other valuable metals. This is the source for a new supply of valuable smelting materials, which in recent years has been gaining attention as an urban mine.
We must also efficiently smelt and refine increasingly low-grade and difficult to process raw materials, as well as advance technological development to make effective use of byproducts. While doing so, we must also further enhance our cost competitiveness through the smelting and refining technologies that are the strength of our smelting and refining business, such as the HPAL technology and the MCLE technology.
R&D Strategy Within the selection and concentration that we perform in our core businesses of mineral resources, smelting and refining, and materials, we carry out priority allocation of research and development costs, and position smelting and refining process technology, powder synthesis and surface treatment technology, crystal growth and processing technology, and exploration, mining, and mineral processing technologies as core technologies.
The project will produce nickel/cobalt MS from low-grade nickel oxide ore by using a high-pressure acid leaching(HPAL) process, a technology with which SMM has successfully started sustained commercial production ahead of competitors worldwide. SMM will purchase the whole MS output(50,000 tons annually) and import to Japan for the nickel ingot/cobalt ingot production at SMM's nickel smelter in Niihama, Ehime Prefecture.
