Project-funded activities in the areas of human trafficking, money-laundering, container control, organized crime and serious crime previously performed in the Division for Operations will be grouped into this Branch(see table 1).
However, other ongoing UNODC initiatives(e.g. the Container Control Programme, the programme on sustainable livelihoods and alternative development etc.) are directly relevant
The Container Control Programme of UNODC and the World Customs Organization was implemented in Ecuador, Ghana, Pakistan and Senegal and the relevant operational units reported seizures of drugs and other illicit goods after profiling of containers for inspection.
Jointly with the World Customs Organization, UNODC made progress in assisting Member States to combat drug trafficking within the framework of the Airport Communication Project(AIRCOP) and the Container Control Programme.
Support to curb trafficking in drugs through the region can also be strengthened by improving the ongoing UNODC container control cooperation against trafficking in Afghan heroin by sea.
Encouraging Member States to consider the active participation of their law enforcement agencies in relevant UNODC initiatives, such as the container control programme of UNODC and the Customs Cooperation Council, and in the exchange of law enforcement information;
Participants welcomed the synergy of that regional programme with related initiatives of UNODC, such as the regional programme for Afghanistan and neighbouring countries, the Paris Pact initiative and the Container Control Programme.

(g) To support the participation of their law enforcement authorities in the Container Control Programme managed by UNODC and to engage with the network of port control units in the exchange of information and operational cooperation to counter illicit trafficking.
The Container Control Programme has developed stronger border management procedures through the establishment of inter-agency port control units and training, promoted inter-agency cooperation and enabled direct exchange of operational information between authorities.
(c) Governments should be encouraged to establish an inter-agency response for container control at national ports and container terminals through the establishment of units specialized in reviewing, selecting and searching suspicious containers. .
Ecuador was selected to participate as the pilot country in the region in the UNODC Global Container Control Programme aimed at reducing drug trafficking using containers in major seaports.
