Partial compliance with the Help Guide by some countries coupled with insufficient analytical consideration of progress made under the Convention in the period under review made it difficult to obtain a clear picture of the status of UNCCD implementation in Africa.
However, some countries ' insufficient compliance with the Help Guide and a lack of analytical consideration of progress made in the period under review could have limited comprehension of the present status of UNCCD implementation in the LAC countries.

Parties recognized that, although useful, the Help Guide, format and methodology currently used for the preparation of national reports do not capture the particularities of situations such as those of the Pacific islands in the Asian region, and would have to be assessed
The help guide was designed to provide the UNCCD national focal points who would coordinate the preparation of the national reports, as well as others involved in the process, with useful information to assist them in the collection, compilation, analysis and presentation of data and information, in line with decision 11/COP.1.
Also requests the secretariat, together with partner agencies and in close collaboration with the Committee on Science and Technology(CST), to review the help guide for the preparation of national reports and update it where appropriate, to include indicators on, inter alia, women and youth participation, as well as social indicators;
The help guide contained background information and explained the procedures for the communication of information and review of implementation of the Convention, a proposed methodology and possible process to follow which would be adapted to suit the particular needs of each country Party, as well as an outline and explanation of the specific guidelines provided by decision 11/COP.1.
A need to improve the Help Guide in terms of the inclusion of a certain number of indicators on civil society involvement into the process of the formulation and implementation of action programmes was often emphasized, as well as the fact that it was crucial to have NGOs involved in the formulation of these criteria.
At its sixth session, the COP requested the secretariat, together with its partner agencies and in close collaboration with the CST, to revise again the Help Guide where appropriate, to include indicators on, inter alia, the participation of women and youth, as well as social indicators, and to allow the country Parties to integrate fully into their reports the thematic areas specified in decision 8/COP.4.
a significant number of scientific and technical activities to combat desertification and mitigate the effects of drought were being implemented at the national and regional levels, the format suggested by the Help Guide did not allow for an adequate description of these activities in the national report, and they recommended changes to the Help Guide in the future.
Additionally, at COP 5 the Parties recognized the need to adjust their national reporting to the evolving needs of the implementation process, notably with respect to the activities relating to the CST and the involvement of civil society, and therefore requested the secretariat to adjust the Help Guide accordingly, inter alia, by including the revisions proposed by the CST.
These indicators should be reflected in the help guides for national reports and used by Parties.
