In order to promote the use of unused wood biomass in the future, it will be necessary to promote small-scale power generation from unused wood biomass, which is estimated to be profitable even in regions with poor conditions.
Agricultural cooperation such as for joint projects to enhance rice production, forestry cooperation such as to develop and utilize unused species of trees, and fishery cooperation such as to promote a more effective use of marine resources are other important areas.
The project harnesses Mitsui's collective strengths by utilizing unused wood(*2) supplied from Mitsui& Co. 's 35,000 hectares of forests in Hokkaido as the fuel for its operation.
In addition to the BDF business, Toyota Tsusho is looking at securing unique technology that can take such unused resources as agricultural waste and convert them in energy, and also contribute both to the environment and business through a same region production and consumption model, both at home and abroad.
As the issues of resources and energy become increasingly more serious, Japan has focused its attention on this vast unused energy resource and is putting its efforts into develop various forms of heat management technology, such as thermoelectric conversion technology, as well as heat storage, heat insulation and heat pump technologies, etc.
At the meeting of the Procurement Price Calculation Committee, which revises the fixed purchase price for FIT, that was held in February 2015, it was decided that the purchase price for power generated from unused wood biomass of less than 2,000kW would be raised starting in FY2015, as shown in Table 2.
Specifically, I use water and carbon dioxide in high-temperature and high-pressure states, including supercritical states, as a substitute for organic catalysts and inorganic acids, and develop catalytic technologies to convert unused resources, such as biomass and organic waste, into useful chemical substances.
This project uses unused wood in publicly and privately owned forests. Wood is piled up onto small trucks and sold on to the chip factory. It brings in some extra income and helps people to get involved with mountain work activities.
As the introduction of small-scale power generation from unused wood biomass progresses, new demand for forest timber offcuts, such as thinned wood that until now had been abandoned, will be created. At the same time, this will also contribute greatly to revitalizing local regions in conjunction with forestry policies, through things like making efficient use of resources and increasing employment in local regions.
In order to realize this hydrogen supply chain, a pilot project was proposed, led by Kawasaki Heavy Industries with the collaboration of Iwatani Corporation and J-Power. In June 2015, this was adopted as NEDO's"pilot project for the creation of a large-scale supply chain for the sea transport of hydrogen produced from untapped lignite.
This plant will manufacture fatty acid esters, which use untapped inedible natural resources as a raw material and market them as a raw material for eco-friendly green ink solvents/resin additives/lubricants, along with the production, under the cooperation of chemical companies, of various microwave application chemicals and fuel.
The YSCP was selected as one of the Next-Generation Energy and Social System Demonstration Areas by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry in April 2010 to build original Japanese smart grid systems and to promote them worldwide. Together with private firms, the project has introduced renewable and unused energies, energy management systems for households, local firms and communities, and next-generation transportation systems.
