As follow-up to the OHCHR mission to Chile to support the establishment of an NHRI(October 2005), the NI Unit provided advice to the Government concerning compliance with the Paris Principles by any future institution.
To review the institutions of the Human Rights Commission and the Human Rights Commissioner(ombudsperson), and to take the measures necessary to bring them into conformity with the Paris Principles(Ireland);
Establish a national human rights institution accredited by the International Coordinating Committee of National Human Rights Institutions(Germany); establish a national human rights institution in accordance with the Paris Principles(Canada);
In 2010, the Government accepted recommendation 4 of the universal periodic review of the country, that it" consider the establishment of a national human rights institution in accordance with the Paris Principles".
Furthermore, the Committee recommends that the State party ensure the independence of such a monitoring mechanism, with regard to its funding, mandate and immunities, so as to guarantee full compliance with the Paris Principles.
OHCHR participated in a workshop on the feasibility of establishing a national human rights institution in Lithuania, held in Lithuania on 17 March 2008, to support the establishment of an institution compliant with the Paris Principles.
