In this context we welcome the ongoing efforts of the Chairman of the Group of 77 to convene sectoral meetings in accordance with the decision of the Second South Summit and the establishment of a follow-up mechanism for implementing specific South-South projects and initiatives presented to the Second South Summit.

They also invited Member States to host sectoral meetings in various fields of cooperation, including South-South forums for parliamentarians, mayors, youth, media and civil society and other thematic meetings as envisaged in the Doha Plan of Action adopted by the Second South Summit.

To promote these and other aspects of South-South cooperation, we need a strengthened G-77 Secretariat as provided for in the Havana Programme of Action adopted by the First South Summit in 2000 and reaffirmed by the Doha Plan of Action adopted by the Second South Summit in 2005.

His Office had initiated its advocacy and support mobilization efforts at the World Conference on Disaster Reduction in January 2005, the thirteenth session of the Commission on Sustainable Development in April, the sixty-first annual ministerial meeting of the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific(ESCAP) in May, and the Second South Summit in June. His Office had been developing collaboration with the Bretton Woods institutions, regional financial institutions, the Global Environmental Facility and other partners.

Furthermore, in its capacity as President of the Group of 77 and China, Algeria recalls the resolution adopted at the Second South Summit(Group of 77 and China), which was held in June 2005 in Doha, which rejected the imposition on developing countries of coercive economic measures and extraterritorial laws, including unilateral embargoes, and reiterated the need to end the economic, commercial and financial embargo imposed by the United States against Cuba.
