At its 46th meeting, on 18 October, the Council decided that the fifth session of the Commission on Science and Technology for Development should be held in Geneva from 21 to 25 May 2001.

The Commission on Science and Technology for Development, which is serviced by UNCTAD, has been assisting the Economic and Social Council since 2006 in the system-wide follow-up to WSIS.
The Commission on Science and Technology for Development, which holds biennial sessions, will discuss the issue of multi-year programme of work at its next session, in 2001.
UNCTAD provided substantive support to the sixty-fourth session of the General Assembly under the agenda items on science and technology for development, and information and communication technologies for development. .
A more detailed report on progress made in implementation of resolution 54/201 would be prepared following the fifth session of the Commission on Science and Technology for Development scheduled for the spring of 2001.
In that respect, a number of issues to be examined by the meeting were also relevant to the work of the Commission on Science and Technology for Development, for which UNCTAD was the secretariat.
Requests the Secretary-General to inform the Commission on Science and Technology for Development annually on the implementation of the outcomes of the World Summit on the Information Society, including all e-applications;
Such information was to be taken into account in the report of the Secretary-General on the implementation of resolution A/58/200 on science and technology for development to the General Assembly at its 60th session.
By this latter resolution, the Council requested the Secretary-General to inform annually the Commission on Science and Technology for Development on the implementation of the outcomes of the Summit, including all e-applications.
(b) UNU/INTECH collaborated with the secretariat of the Commission on Science and Technology for Development in support of the work programme on biotechnology of the Commission;
A STIP review for Angola was finalized and presented at the eleventh session of the Commission on Science and Technology for Development, held from 26 to 30 May 2008.
