The two ministers also exchanged views on various issues pertaining to the international community, including the United Nations Security Council reform, climate change, North Korean issues, and assistance to Haiti.
Bilateral Dialogue and Cooperation(1)Both ministers appreciated the role the Ukraine-Japan Centre has been fulfilling, and agreed to cooperate on making the Centre a central part of the bilateral cooperation.
Both ministers also agreed to work in close cooperation on the intergovernmental negotiations based on written agreements in New York, so as to obtain specific outcomes of the reforms of the United Nations Security Council.
Both ministers discussed ways to boost bilateral ties and stressed the need to strengthen political consultation and coordination between the two Ministries of Foreign Affairs.
At the meeting, the two Ministers reviewed the various cooperation projects, the international issues of common interest and the prospects for cooperation, particularly in the area of the blue economy and also maritime safety and Connectivity.
Cooperation in addressing challenges of the international community The two ministers exchanged views regarding United Nations Security Council reform and other matters, and agreed to continue to work together towards addressing the issues faced by the international community.
Furthermore, the two ministers shared the view that they would continue cooperating on issues on the agenda in international arena, including the early realization of the United Nations Security Council reform.
Both sides reaffirmed that it is important for the international community to continue to ensure the full implementation of UN Security Council resolutions towards the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.
Following that, the two foreign ministers welcomed the recent major progress toward reaching an agreement in the bilateral investment agreement negotiations that began in July 2014, and shared the view that they will further accelerate the negotiations with the aim of reaching an agreement promptly.
The two foreign ministers affirmed that Japan and Canada would work closely in order to realize the complete, verifiable and irreversible dismantlement of all weapons of mass destruction, including biological and chemical weapons, and ballistic missiles of all ranges, by North Korea.
As important issues between Japan and Brazil, the two foreign ministers shared their views that they would cooperate for the promotion of trade and investment and preparation of business environments in a wide range of fields such as health, agriculture, shipbuilding, capacity building for industry, and infrastructure improvement, and enhance economic relations.
The two foreign ministers affirmed the further strengthening of cooperation in the security field and shared the view that, from that perspective, the Agreement on the Security of Information scheduled to be signed following the meeting was significant for contributing to advancing security and defense cooperation between the two governments.
Following the meeting, the two foreign ministers signed a joint statement Opening(1) Foreign Minister Kishida welcomed Foreign Minister Corlatean on his first visit to Japan, and welcomed being able to hold the foreign ministers' meeting soon after the launch of new cabinets in both countries at the end of last year.
The two foreign ministers appreciated the current excellent bilateral relationship between their two countries, and shared the view that they would expand the Japan-Italy relations in a broad range of fields in this milestone year of the 150th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Italy.
Furthermore, both foreign ministers exchanged opinions on issues such as the reform of the United Nations and cooperation at international organizations, the Middle East situation including Syria and Iran, the situation in Latin America and the Caribbean, climate change, renewable energy, and disaster prevention conference.
In their Strategic Dialogue, both Ministers broadly exchanged opinions from the strategic viewpoint about the main agendas between the two countries, such as politics and security, economic relations including high speed railway and ODA, as well as people-to-people exchanges including Japanese language education, sports exchange and regional exchange.
Furthermore, the two ministers welcomed the 90th anniversary of the establishment of the diplomatic relations between Japan and Canada this year, while reaffirming that they will continue to deepen the bilateral relationship in a broad range of fields, including security and economy.
Both Foreign Ministers decided to continue the close cooperation in order to solve various international issues such as the early realization of the reform of the UN Security Council, denuclearization in North Korea In addition, the two ministers exchanged their views on international situation which both are interested in.
We would like to go forward with the improvement of the Japan-China relationship under the concept of a"Mutually Beneficial Relationship Based on Common Strategic Interests" this year as the 45th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations between Japan and China.(3) The two foreign ministers had a candid exchange of views regarding how to move forward on Japan-China relations this year, including their views on the various issues of concern.
Both foreign ministers agreed that, from the standpoint of boosting exchanges between the two countries' citizens, they would accelerate discussions on introducing a working holiday scheme, and that in order to vitalize economic relations, the two countries would move ahead with the domestic procedures necessary to promptly bring the Agreement between Japan and Italy on Social Security into force.
