With respect to programme 12, the Group endorsed the recommendations contained in the report of the Committee for Programme and Coordination on the second part of its thirty-fourth session on programme and coordination and hopes that they will be taken into account in the report to be submitted to the General Assembly on this subject.

The background paper draws the attention of the Joint Meetings to a number of issues recently addressed by the Administrative Committee on Coordination and its Inter-Agency Committee on Sustainable Development and by the Commission on Sustainable Development, which are of particular relevance to the Committee for Programme and Coordination as the main subsidiary organ of the General Assembly and the Economic and Social Council in the area of programme planning and coordination.

Currently, monitoring and oversight submissions by the Secretariat include reports to the Advisory Committee on Administrative and Budgetary Questions, the Committee for Programme and Coordination, the Office of Internal Oversight Services, the Joint Inspection Unit, the United Nations Board of Auditors, as well as such other substantive oversight bodies as the Committee on Conferences, the Committee on Information, the Population Commission, the Statistical Commission, the Special Committee on Peace-keeping Operations, etc.

The Centre, within the limitations of the resources available, continued its efforts to enhance and focus its activities and to implement its mandates in this field in a cost-effective manner, taking into account the priorities of work as defined by its legislative bodies and the recommendations of the Committee for Programme and Coordination for a more balanced approach between combating international crime threats and promoting fair and efficient criminal justice systems(A/56/16, para. 185).
