Further invited international, regional and national organizations and institutions involved in the management of forest certification schemes to consider promoting the convergence among certification schemes
At Rio+20, we call upon Governments to pledge concrete and systematic support and promotion of multi-stakeholder-managed forest certification systems in all parts of the world, with particular emphasis on tropical rainforests.
The project has collaborated with the World Wildlife Fund to cover forest certification evaluation costs for a subset of communities and promoted diversified enterprises based on non-timber forest products, tourism and cultural services, including traditional medical care.
To encourage continued investment in the forestry sector and secure regional and international markets for sustainably produced, legal forest products, and at the same time enhance the credibility of forest certification, several donors are financing extensive forest certification promotion projects in the region.
Colombia reported that it had promoted efforts to enhance the institutional image of alternative development and to develop an alternative development trade brand and a programme of forest certification.
In most cases the global union federations rely on local union affiliates to report abuses of the social or environmental criteria of their national legislation, global framework agreements, and/or sustainable forest certification scheme criteria.
Also recognized that frameworks for criteria and indicators have provided a substantial basis for the development of forest certification schemes and the identification of indicators for monitoring forest governance, and also contributed to the evolution of the Global Forest Resources Assessment Programme of FAO as a comprehensive assessment of the world ' s forests and their management;
Invited countries and relevant international organizations and institutions to facilitate multi-stakeholder dialogues to ensure all interests are reflected in forest certification schemes and the development of locally applicable certification standards and procedures, including simplified schemes for communities and smallholders, and the improvement of the capacity of local certification auditors;
(i) To establish an appropriate international mechanism to objectively and transparently assess forest certification schemes and public procurement policies against standards that will be internationally agreed in order to promote mutual recognition of forest certification schemes and to facilitate trade in legally and sustainably produced forest goods and services;[see previous para. 11(h) ter].
(c) To encourage forest owners and the private sector, including timber and non-timber forest product processors, exporters and importers, as well as civil society organizations, to develop, promote and implement voluntary instruments, approaches and measures, such as forest certification schemes, in order to adopt good business practices and to improve market transparency;[see previous para. 8(m)].
Acknowledged that forest certification is one of the broadly accepted instruments currently applied at the forest management unit level to demonstrate sustainable forest management, and recognized the considerable progress in the past two decades in its development and application, including associated chainofcustody tracking/certification systems;
