Pursuant to General Assembly resolution 48/162 of 20 December 1993, the institutions were invited to furnish relevant special reports and studies on selected themes, within their respective mandates and areas of expertise, as well as on important developments in the world economy and in international economic cooperation, in accordance with the agreements signed between them and the United Nations.

It should be noted that the issues and actions under the selected themes for the eighteenth session of the Commission on Sustainable Development are especially closely linked in the case of small island developing States, in which interlinkages need to be considered in evaluating policies and programmes, in view of the low carrying capacities of the systems of those States.

The meeting opened with an address by the Deputy Secretary-General and statements on behalf of the Trade and Development Board of UNCTAD, the International Monetary and Financial Committee of the International Monetary Fund(IMF), the Development Committee of the World Bank and IMF and the World Trade Organization. The meeting was organized around three consecutive, informal, interactive debates on selected themes.
The Commission for Sustainable Development(CSD) is a functional commission of ECOSOC responsible for promoting sustainable development through technical cooperation and capacity building at international, regional and national levels, and especially through the implementation of Agenda 21, the Johannesburg Plan of Implementation and the Barbados Programme of Action for Sustainable Development of Small Island Developing States. It currently manages its work by means of a rolling cycle of two-year discussions focused on selected themes.
