The designers hope the tower will be“a profoundly visible landmark standing for an economical, environmental and socially sustainable, future-oriented development”.
In order to address social sustainability adequately, the new framework will need to incorporate the issues that lie at the core of social development: social justice, equality, social inclusion and participation.
By developing of a common environmental and social sustainability framework, the UN will strengthen its leadership role and better support Member States to further the global sustainability agenda at all levels.
Social sustainability requires equity within and between generations, social integration and inclusion, broad-based participation and empowerment and engagement of citizens to direct their own future.
To this end, an integrated approach that engages all key stakeholders in order to produce innovative solutions to foster economic, environmental and social sustainability, will be required.
Further clarification of the concept of social sustainability will enable better articulation of these synergies and ensure greater coherence among social, economic and environmental policies.
One of the main challenges of the Johannesburg Summit will be to determine how the criteria of economic, environmental and social sustainability can be made operative in the different spheres of public policy in an integrated manner.
