In response to the request contained in a letter dated 21 June 2001 from the Permanent Observer of Palestine to the United Nations addressed to the President of the Security Council( S/2001/616), the President, in accordance with the rules of procedure and the previous practice in that regard, invited the Permanent Observer of Palestine to the United Nations to participate in the discussion.

At the same meeting, the President drew attention to the request contained in a letter dated 12 May 1995 from the Permanent Observer of Palestine to the United Nations(S/1995/388) that, in accordance with its previous practice, the Security Council invite the Permanent Observer of Palestine to participate in the debate.
