Oudomxay is one of the most accessible provinces in northern Laos- located about five hours from Luang Prabang on Route 13. Luang Prabang province has a population of just over 400,000 people, including 8 distinct ethnic groups. The Kmhmu-often this is spelled Khmu- are the largest ethnic group in the province and make up the majority(around 44%) of its population. The Hmong are the second most populous ethnic minority(16%). Low land Lao people comprise 39% of the population and live mostly in lowland valleys and Luang Prabang town.
These 49 different ethnic groups have different customs, religions and lifestyles. For example, the Tai Lao traditionally lived in wood houses on stilts along riverbanks, practising a blend of Buddhism and spirit worship, and farming paddy rice fields. However, the Hmong traditionally lived in wood houses with thatched roofs on the ground, practising spirit and ancestor worship, and planting dry upland rice.
Since the inception of Hmong Hilltribe Lodge, we have enjoyed a rich reciprocal relationship with our tribal neighbours. Every evening, following a delicious barbeque and buffet dinner served by moonlight at our open-air restaurant, performers from the nearby Hmong village of Mae Khi stage a cultural show for our guests to enjoy. The show incorporates a series of dances and performances that portray traditional Hmong lifestyle, including a wedding ceremony, a shamanic ritual and the custom of throwing'makong'(the cotton ball) on Hmong New Year.
