A magnetic core and magnetic drum unit were used as the main memory unit for the FACOM222P prototype, but the FACOM 621 was newly developed as an auxiliary memory unit for the commercial FACOM 222A, based on the technology of the D101 magnetic drum unit.
As basic software, this machine was equipped with the newly developed DPS10 which was based on a UNIX kernel. For main memory, the system used 64 kilobit MOS LSI with a cycle time of 450ns, and its maximum main memory capacity was 8 megabytes.
Announced by Oki Electric industry in 1966 as a computer for office use, performed both real-time and batch processing for billing, and was capable of simultaneously processing different jobs with up to 8 OKITYPER typewriters. To achieve this functionality, the main memory unit was 16 kilobytes magnetic core, and sorting processing was done with a 67 kilobytes magnetic drum.
Before you start proceeding with this tutorial, I'm making an assumption that you are already aware of basic computer concepts like what is keyboard, mouse, monitor, input, output, primary memory, secondary memory, etc. If you are not well aware of these concepts, then I will suggest you to go through our short tutorial on Computer Fundamentals.
