一八四八年にロンドンで出版された『オリエント画集』は、日本では唯一、アジア・アフリカ言語文化研究所が所蔵するもので、今回の展示では、よりオリジナルに近いデジタル修復版をご覧にいれます。

For the current exhibition, I have painted both with oil and acrylic. I draw landscape on the basis of my own memorized experience: once I decide this or that scenery to depict, then I start drawing after clarifying the amount of"time" to be integrated in the picture plane.

今回の展示「stoneageinthewoods」では作家の持ち味と言える従来の手法を駆使した作品とともに壁面にシルクスクリーンを直接プリントし、その上に画像や物質を重ねる新作も発表します。
In this exhibition,“Stone Age in the Woods,” he will release a new art piece, making full use of his unique method, by overlaying images and objects on a silkscreen that is displayed directly on the wall.

中には美術的観点からみれば技術的に稚拙な作品もあるかもしれないが、今回の展示では東南アジアの現在の文化的・政治的背景を伝えるという事に重点を置き、そういった作品も意図的に混ぜているとの事。
While there may be technically somewhat childish artworks from the artistic point of view are also included, this time the exhibition focuses on communicating the current cultural and political background in Southeast Asia, and such works are intentionally included.

今回の展示に引きつけて言えば、初期条件として、全聾の天才が苦難の果てに仕上げた歴史的名作という「物語」があるか、翻って軍部が戦中当時、アジア諸国を欧米列強の抑圧から解放する西洋近代の超克という「物語」があるか、その違いだけである。
With regard to this exhibit, the only difference is whether as an initial condition there is a“story” about a historic masterpiece created in the face of considerable hardship by a totally deaf genius, or a“story” about how, on reflection, Western modernity was“overcome” by the military who liberated Asia from the oppression of the Western powers during the war.
