The first disciples returned with their new Master from the Jordan to Galilee and apparently both John and the others remained for some time with Jesus(cf. John 12:12, 22; 4:2, 8, 27 sqq.).
Ellen White explains this whole experience:"Was it, confessed and forsaken sins through serious prayer and dedication to God that the first disciples prepare for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost. The same job, only more so, it must be done now."(TM, p. 507).
The original disciples of the Lord Jesus, such as Peter, John, and Nathanael, did not cling to the literal meaning of the prophecies or compare it with what God did, nor did they establish rules about how God should come, but instead they focused on listening to the truth the Lord Jesus expressed, and saw that His work was full of authority and power and could not be done by anyone else.
