During the biennium 1996-1997, substantive support will continue to be provided to the high-level and coordination segments of the Economic and Social Council, including the preparation of the reports and the identification of themes, as well as to its subsidiary bodies, as required, and to the General Assembly, particularly to its Second Committee.
The issues addressed and decisions taken at the Economic and Social Council ' s substantive sessions throughout the Decade, especially the themes of its high-level and coordination segments, focused attention on critical issues of policy, implementation and coordination, with the aim of accelerating the pace of poverty reduction.
Social Council(Council resolution 2001/27, paras. 3-5, 7 and 23)(under the high-level and coordination segments, as well as agenda item 8 entitled" Implementation of General Assembly resolutions 50/227 and 52/12 B")(E/2002/73).

The Commission considered the follow-up to the agreed conclusions of the Economic and Social Council ' s high-level and coordination segments and to its resolutions of 1999, and brought to the attention of the Council a number of actions that had been taken or were planned consistent with the Council ' s requests, in particular the development of a multi-year programme of work for the Commission covering the period 2000-2003.
Similarly, the Statistical Commission, at its thirty-first session, in 2000, considered the item" Follow-up to the agreed conclusions of the Economic and Social Council high-level and coordination segments and to its resolutions"(item 12) and, as mentioned in section III above, had before it a conference room paper outlining relevant follow-up actions undertaken.
(viii) As proposed in the report of the Secretary-General on the follow-up to conferences(E/1998/19), the Council may wish to encourage all functional commissions to consider including in their agenda a standing item on follow-up to the agreed conclusions of the Council to ensure that the agreed conclusions of the high-level and coordination segments are followed up systematically by the United Nations system(para. 44).

At the 45th meeting, on 16 December, the Council heard a statement by the representative of Germany on the results of the informal consultations that had taken place under the chairmanship of the Vice-President of the Council, Mr. Gerhard Walter Henze( Germany), on the themes for the high-level and coordination segments of the Council 's 1998 substantive session and the principal themes for consideration at the high-level meeting of the operational activities segment of that session.

With the high-level and coordination segments addressing the same cross-sectoral conference theme(see agreed conclusions 2002/1, para. 6), the contribution of the operational activities segment could, for example, take the form of specific panels or dialogues, addressing the development role of the United Nations system through its operational arm in relation to the same or a related theme.
They would also improve the ability of the Commission to more continuously carry out its role in the follow-up of the statistical implications of major United Nations conferences and summits, as well as the agreed conclusions of the Economic and Social Council's high-level and coordination segments and its resolutions, which the Working Group of the Commission has placed on the agenda of the Commission as a standing item(see E/CN.3/1999/20, para. 26).
At its thirty-fourth session, in 1994, CPC noted that the Economic and Social Council was carrying out its coordination functions in the context of its high-level and coordination segments; considered that it could assist in the fulfilment of the Council ' s role by focusing its attention on programming and prioritization of issues; and requested that annual overview reports of ACC be directed towards providing the necessary information to assist CPC in fulfilling that function(A/49/16(Part I), para. 69).
Consultations will take place under the Chairmanship of H.E. Mr. Gerhard Walter Henze(Germany) on Wednesday, 10 De-cember 1997, at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. in Conference Room 6, on the selection of themes for the high-level and coordination segments of the substantive session of 1998, as well as a principal theme or themes for consideration at the high-level meeting of the operational activities segment of the substantive session of 1998(E/ 1997/91, E/1997/92 and Add.1).
