Within the scope of its activities, ICG provided funding that enabled 10 professionals from Africa to participate in a workshop on satellite navigation science and technology for Africa held at the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics, in Trieste, Italy, from 23 March to 9 April 2009, and a workshop on establishment of GNSS permanent stations and data processing held at the Regional Centre for Mapping of Resources for Development, in Nairobi from 24 August to 4 September 2009.
The Programme provided advisory assistance and financial support to professionals from Africa to participate in the following two workshops: a workshop on satellite navigation science and technology for Africa held at the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics, in Trieste, Italy, from 23 March to 9 April 2009 and a workshop on establishment of GNSS permanent stations and data processing held at the Regional Centre for Mapping of Resources for Development, in Nairobi from 24 August to 4 September 2009.

In collaboration with the Regional Centre for Mapping of Resources for Development, ECA plans to organize the following workshops.
The Workshop was held at the Regional Centre for Mapping of Resources for Development in Nairobi from 23 July to 3 August 2012.
The workshop also provided the opportunity for the signature of an agreement with the Regional Center for Mapping of Resources for Development for the establishment of a UN-SPIDER regional support office in Nairobi.
UNITAR/UNOSAT has established a presence in Nairobi to foster collaboration with other East African regional actors, including the Regional Centre for Mapping of Resources for Development.
Experts from the International Centre for Drought Risk Reduction, the Sudan Remote Sensing Authority and the Regional Centre for Mapping of Resources for Development opened the discussion by sharing information about their experiences.
Some participants represented regional organizations, such as the Regional Centre for Mapping of Resources for Development(RCMRD) which is based in Kenya and supports most African countries, and the Asian Disaster Preparedness Centre in Bangkok.
Five experts from UN-SPIDER, the China Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower Research and the Regional Centre for Mapping of Resources for Development were fully engaged in the activity, which was coordinated by UN-SPIDER.

The second presentation, by the Regional Centre for Mapping of Resources for Development(RCMRD), gave participants an overview of how space-based information is used in African countries to contribute to land-use planning, sound policy formulation and allocation of resources.
In 2006, WFP, FAO and GMFS will install GeoNetwork spatial information environment(SIE) for the Southern African Development Community, the Regional Centre for Mapping of Resources for Development and the Regional Training Centre for Agromeoterology and Operational Hydrology and their Applications(AGRHYMET).
The development of supporting information infrastructures, such as the Mesoamerican Regional Visualization and Monitoring System(SERVIR), an ongoing project facilitated by the Regional Centre for Mapping of Resources for Development in Kenya, was vital for the efficient utilization of data derived from small satellites.
In 2006, WFP, FAO and the Global Monitoring for Food Security project of ESA installed the GeoNetwork spatial information environment for the Southern African Development Community, the Regional Centre for Mapping of Resources for Development and the Regional Training Centre for Agrometeorology and Operational Hydrology(see box 2).
Representatives of the following organizations and agencies took part in the workshop and served as resource persons: the GEF and four of its agencies(UNDP, FAO, UNEP and the African Development Bank), Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit(GIZ) and the Regional Center for Mapping of Resources for Development;
UN-SPIDER continued to work closely with and to build upon the expertise and capabilities of its regional support offices established in Africa, namely the Algerian Space Agency, the National Space Research and Development Agency of Nigeria and the Regional Center for Mapping of Resources for Development, which is based in Nairobi.
In 2010-2011 and beyond, ECA, in collaboration with the Regional Centres for Training in Aerospace Surveys and the Regional Centre for Mapping of Resources for Development, will continue to develop training programmes in geo-information technologies and their applications in resource assessment, planning, management and monitoring for resource technicians, managers and scientists.
