In its resolution 55/188 of 20 December 2000, on preventing and combating corrupt practices and illegal transfer of funds and repatriation of such funds to the countries of origin, the General Assembly invited the intergovernmental open-ended expert group to examine the question of illegally transferred funds and the repatriation of such funds.
Mr. Majlessi(United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime(UNODC)) introduced the report of the Secretary-General on preventing and combating corrupt practices and transfer of assets of illicit origin and returning such assets, in particular to the countries of origin, consistent with the United Nations Convention against Corruption(A/63/88).
The present report has been prepared by the United Nations Centre for International Crime Prevention of the United Nations Office for Drug Control and Crime Prevention, in response to General Assembly resolution 56/186 of 21 December 2001 on preventing and combating corrupt practices and transfer of funds of illicit origin and returning such funds to the countries of origin.
As noted in the report of the Secretary-General on preventing and combating corrupt practices and transfer of assets of illicit origin, consistent with the United Nations Convention against Corruption(A/63/88), that Convention was the first legally binding instrument on the subject.
At its 42nd meeting, on 11 December 2009, the Second Committee adopted draft resolution A/C.2/64/L.64 on preventing and combating corrupt practices and transfer of assets of illicit origin and returning such assets, in particular to the countries of origin, consistent with the United Nations Convention against Corruption.
