Recalling also that General Assembly resolution 52/231 encourages regional preparatory activities for the special session by Governments, in cooperation with the regional commissions, and recommends submission of the information on the implementation of the Platform for Action as an input to the Commission on the Status of Women at its forty-fourth session, in the year 2000.
Mrs. Eshmambetova(Kyrgyzstan) said that the Subregional Conference of Senior Governmental Experts on the Implementation of the Platform for Action in Central and Eastern Europe, held in Bucharest in September 1996, had assisted countries with transitional economies in the preparation of their national action plans.
Furthermore, ECE has been associated with the Division for the Advancement for Women of the United Nations Secretariat and UNDP for the Subregional Conference on the Implementation of the Platform for Action in Central and Eastern Europe, organized by the Government of Romania at Bucharest in September 1996.
Calls upon the Secretary-General, in collaboration with the regional commissions, to develop a standardized questionnaire, with a focused set of indicators, on all critical areas of concern as a framework to assist national Governments in their assessment of and reporting on the implementation of the Platform for Action;
(c) Continuing to support the work of the Special Adviser on Gender Issues and Advancement of Women in advocating and supporting gender mainstreaming throughout the United Nations system, supporting equal opportunities within the United Nations, promoting women ' s economic and political empowerment and facilitating inter-agency collaboration on the implementation of the Platform for Action and the outcome document;
A subregional conference of senior governmental experts on the implementation of the Platform for Action adopted by the Fourth World Conference on Women in Central and Eastern Europe, held at Bucharest from 12 to 14 September 1996, was attended by 36 experts from 21 countries.
In that connection, excellent results had also been achieved at the Subregional Conference of Senior Governmental Experts on the Implementation of the Platform for Action adopted by the 1995 Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing, in central and eastern Europe, which had been held in Bucharest, Romania, in September 1996.
In order to prepare a synthesized report on the implementation of the Platform for Action, based, inter alia, on national action plans and any other sources of information already available in the United Nations system, for the Commission on the Status of Women at its forty-second session, in 1998, the Secretary-General sent to Member States, a second note verbale dated 17 June 1997, inviting them to submit national implementation strategies or information on the status of their preparation.
In an effort to assist Member States in the preparation of national action plans, the report of the Subregional Conference of Senior Governmental Experts on the Implementation of the Platform for Action in Central and Eastern Europe, held at Bucharest from 12 to 14 September 1996, was translated into all official languages of the United Nations and made available to Member States. The report contains the outline of a model national action plan.
Convention No. 111: In its 2001 observation, the Committee noted from the Brazilian National Report on the Implementation of the Platform for Action of the Fourth United Nations World Conference on Women prepared for June 2000(Beijng+5) that, while women ' s participation grows and they have greater occupational mobility, occupational segregation and the gender wage gap persist and the rate of women in unemployment had risen.
Finally, ECE co-sponsored a subregional conference of senior governmental experts on the Implementation of the Platform for Action in Central and Eastern Europe(Bucharest, Romania, 12-14 September 1996), organized jointly by the Division for the Advancement of Women, the Regional Bureau for Europe,
And resolutions 1998/43 of 31 July 1998 on mainstreaming the gender perspective into all policies and programmes in the United Nations system and 1998/26 of 28 July 1998 on the implementation of the Platform for Action of the Fourth World Conference on Women and the role of operational activities in promoting, in particular, capacity-building and resource mobilization for enhancing the participation of women in development.
These included publications on strategies for promoting legal literacy in Africa; strategies for promoting a favourable legal environment for women's access to productive resources; national government and selected non-governmental organization machineries on women in Africa; roster of African women experts; guidelines for preparing national reports on the implementation of the platforms for action; and traditional and cultural practices harmful to the girl child.
Views and suggestions on the implementation of the Platform for Action will be exchanged.
Report on the implementation of the Platform for Action based on its review of reports of States parties(CEDAW/C/1999/I/5).
National action plans should, therefore, serve as a reference point for preparing future reports on the implementation of the Platform for Action at the national level.
A national seminar on the implementation of the Platform for Action was to be held in April 1996 in cooperation with the UNDP office in Cuba.
Governments are also reporting that the dearth of women in decision-making still persists and this is also a constraint on the implementation of the Platform for Action.
