During the forty-ninth session of the Commission for Social Development, held in New York in February 2011, the Special Rapporteur of the Commission presented his report on the monitoring of the implementation of the Standard Rules on the Equalization of Opportunities for Persons with Disabilities and discussed his planned activities to contribute to mainstreaming disability in development.

The members of the Rio Group attached particular importance to the family as the basic structure of society and reiterated their commitment to protect and promote the family. They also noted with interest the report on the monitoring of the implementation of the Standard Rules on the Equalization of Opportunities for Persons with Disabilities(A/52/56) and underscored their support for the application of the Rules and the work of the Special Rapporteur.
